      <image:title>Blog - Venus in Leo</image:title>
<image:caption>Born under a Cancer sun has provided reason for my obsession with water. Every place where I have placed roots has a path to the nearest body of water burned into navigation system in my brain. My grandma insists that she taught me to swim before I could walk, however I’m unsure how credible this statement is considering she never learned to fully swim herself. So naturally, when I learned who the iconic Venus was, I took no time in allowing myself to be hypnotized by her beauty and was constantly on the hunt for other historic images that expressed her likeness. Her emotions were fluid and the way she presented her was raw. The Birth of Venus has been painted, drawn or recreated a million times in a multitude of ways which has led me to understand that I am by no means the only one enchanted by her beauty. I even embrace a rendition of her on my own castle, framed and still, one of my favorite tattoos. However, it may be in our best interest to not get wrapped up in culturally idolized beauty. I mean sure, these images and people are beautiful, they wouldn’t be alluring if you weren’t supposed to like them, but it’s important to not value their appearance over authenticity and the ability to express yourself as an individual.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Venus in Leo</image:title>
<image:caption>It is to my understanding that the application of beauty in a hierarchal standard is like trippin’ on a hole in a paper heart. You will consistently harp on the “could haves” or “would haves” trying to conform to any trend or supposed standard that was served to you on a silver platter. This is a love letter from an individual who was forced into version of herself who was focused on survival instead of being given the space to discover a fully developed sense of self. It took me what feels like a lifetime to discover the hole I kept trippin’ on, and it wasn’t until I stopped subscribing to others’ definitions of beauty that I was able to tread down the path of individualism that provided a foundation for me to live authentically. I presently find power in embracing my feminine side which sometimes manifests as sharp edges and leaves a metallic taste in my mouth. Other times, femininity feels like an afternoon in the wildflowers with Slyvia Plath. I find access to a liberated self in other people’s liberation within a realm of possibly where they are free to be and free to act. I’ve always yearned for a community that was able to sit with difference and celebrated everyone’s expression of individuality. It is my intention with my platform to provide a guide to forward thinking, one leads in a direction that acknowledges the intersections of all identities and masters the skill of authentic listening as well. One where honesty leads to authenticity that leads to acceptance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lineage</image:title>
<image:caption>I suppose my lineage began when I heard “Cherry Bomb” by the Runaways in 8th grade. I was immediately hypnotized by the bands’ lead singer, Charrie Currie. Her deep voice and assumed feminine disposition were fascinating. Following the death of my mother, I was looking for a sense of purpose, maybe even a way to surprise the people surrounding me. Her stage presence burned the idea into my subconscious that I wasn’t necessarily expected to fit into society’s box that was crafted for me. Unbeknownst to me, I was actively dismantling the idea of the Italian American nuclear family in my brain and detaching myself from every familial obligation. I was a teenager, probably the most angsty I had ever been, and growing up in a lower-class neighborhood that was diseased with wide-spread drug addiction. And from the first time I turned on Bikini Kill, and let Kathleen Hanna growl at me to suck her left one, I knew I had discovered my niche idea of womanhood… and it was regularly being championed in riot grrrls of the 90s and punk women from the 80s. I quickly found that they sought to share their gripes with the oppression perpetrated by our racialized, gendered, oppressive structure of our society through the medium of zines. Whether it was Tobi Vail’s zine Jigsaw or Ramdasha Bikcee’s zine GUNK, I was scouring the pages, fascinated with the perceived lazy design that was in fact, calculated and profusely informative in a palatable manner</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Lineage</image:title>
<image:caption>As I have breached the latter part of my 30th year, I am discovering my advocacy lineage enriched with feminists with varying racial, ethnic, and gendered backgrounds from around the world that have spread a more inclusive and acceptable idea of equality in my mind. Many who consider capitalist oppression on not just people existing outside of the dominant gender but the environment as well. After completing a gender studies bachelor’s program, my understanding of consumption is self-admittedly entirely progressive, and I understand capitalism as an opposing force to my understanding of an ideal society. This has forced me fully lean into the “pleasure” part of activism where I am heeding the direction of my solar plexus, latching onto whatever I find that fits… and sticks. adrienne maree brown, bell hooks, Juju Bae, and Jezz Chung have all offered a new reality to me that centers activism based on love and social understanding. And really, I just let the rest build from that. Audre Lorde convinced me to follow my orgasmic “yes” and science fiction has offered my mind with many post-apocalyptic solutions for an egalitarian society. Sarah Ahmed described the feminist movement in her opening chapter in her book, Bad Feminist, as complex and flawed due to it being comprised of complexly flawed individuals. She stresses in the same chapter how feminism is experienced through sensation and can only be constructed personally by the participant, not by the sector of the movement that they participate in. I have also connected to ecofeminist, Vandana Shiva, and have bared witness her teachings in that males domination over women is being mirrored in the domination of the natural world as well (*ahem* extractive capitalism *ahem*). Amanda McCarthy, host of the Clotheshorse Podcast, has reinforced how destructive contemporary consumption is. She has opened my eyes to the global commodity chain and its viciousness to not only the environment but how poisonous it is to everyone that participates in it. All these ideas, these beautifully insightful and powerful people have been layering themselves to help me construct and reinforce my lineage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - (Re) Discovery - The desire to feel safe has dominated my lifestyle and therefore, the way I look. I learned that I have embodied this trauma and no longer present myself as someone I am familiar with.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a student of gender studies, I have learned of the true meaning of camp and other pop culture fashion phenomena that has influenced many of my feminist predecessors. The iconic Gloria Steinem, who famously wore her perfectly tinted glasses overtop her hair or my riot girl idol, Kathleen Hanna, who has proudly sported her short babydoll dresses and little kicky heels for decades. Or what about Lady Gaga that continuously makes bold fashion choices without a second thought? I admittedly cower in their shadow and admire (with big glitter rainbow heart eyes) their ability to lean into their feminine softness while still presenting a desirable “please don’t fuck with me” attitude. This is something I feel like I used to exude, but this was, of course, before I was disabled and in recovery.</image:caption>
